Dry Fire Con - Extinguishing system
Description "Dry Fire Con"

Dry Fire Con has been developed to be an unpressurized extinction and quarantine container for instable and damaged vehicles, especially for electro vehicles with lithium batteries.

Dry Fire Con is fitted with strong gabion-metal baskets on its longitudinal side, its head side, its floor, as well as its doors and its ceiling. The baskets are filled with PP-fleece bags which contain AkkuGrain.

The extinguish of a defective Li-ion battery (thermal runaway) in an e-vehicle is much more efficient and problem-free in the Dry-Fire-Con. The flames are extinguished rapidly through the consumption of the limited amount of oxygen and through the burning itself. Furthermore, the creation of water vapor, as a result of the heating of the AkkuGrain, suppresses the rest of the air. A rapid cooling occurs due to the emerged water vapor.

Process of the fire and the extinguishing procedure in the dry fire con

At the beginning of the fire the fleece covering on the ceiling melts and the AkkuGrain trickling down on the sides. Now the vehicle is covered with the granulate.

The extinguishing procedure of a vehicle with a combustion engine is finished immediately with the consumption of the oxygen and the cooling of the object on fire. AkkuGrain prevents further fire outbreaks with the creation of water vapor and inertization.

A vehicle with electric drive carries the risk of a thermal runaway if the lithium battery is damaged. During a thermal runaway all the stored electric energy gets released unstoppably. This leads to a strong overheating of the battery up to 600-1100°C. Initially there is an outgassing of flammable solvents out of the electrolyte.

The amounts of activated carbon in the AkkuGrain and the adsorption capacity of the diatomaceous earth in the Grain SUPER as well as of the pearlite in the AkkuGrain LIGHT, remove the solvents, which have leaked out, detoxify the reaction gases, and prevent further fire or explosions.

The conduction salt LiPF6 decomposes in toxic decay products. The water vapor leads to their hydrolysis to HF and H3PO4. These products get neutralized and fixed by the microfine Algae lime present in the AkkuGrain.

The plastic of the lithium battery decomposes in non-organic decay products, like CO2, CO, CH4 and H2, as well as in various organic decay products with rising molecular weight up to soot. The soot gets adsorbed almost completely by the AkkuGrain. The higher their molecular weight, the more complete the adsorption of the organic decomposition products.

The thermal runaway of a lithium battery proceeds often with a heavy fire or explosions. Often, thermal runaways destroy surrounding buildings and endanger the health of people in the surrounding.

AkkuGrain in the extinguishing container forms a high quantity of water vapor, whereby the temperature gets reduced.

The displacement of air largely prevents fires. Furthermore, the water vapor decomposes toxic decay products of LiPF6. The acidic products HF and H3PO4, created by this process, get neutralized and fixed in AkkuGrain.

The adsorbents (activated carbon, diatomaceous earth, and pearlite) present in pellets, are appropriate to remove organic substances out of the decomposition gases, due to their high permeability for gases and vapors and their adsorption potential.

Cooling down when an electric car burns down in the extinguishing container

Water vapor of the heat dissipation, which is a result of the hot areas of the battery in the thermal runaway, escapes in the free gas compartment of the container. A part of the vapors escapes the pressureless container through release openings and submits the energy to the ambient air. The remaining part of the water vapor condenses on the outer walls and the ceiling. The released heat gets submitted immediately and definitely through the metal walls.
