Extinguishing process
Description
The Dry-Fire-Con was developed as a pressure- and water-free quarantine container. Noticeable and damaged electric vehicles can be quarantined very quickly and safely.
The container is fully lined with metal baskets filled with the globally patented AkkuGrain granulate.
This quarantine system allows for complete containment of the thermal runaway of an electric vehicle.
Flames are quickly extinguished due to the consumption of the limited oxygen in the air and the combustion itself. Additionally, the formation of water vapor from the heating of the AkkuGrain displaces the remaining air. This results in rapid cooling of the fire source through the generated water vapor.
Procedure of Fire and Extinguishing in the Firefighting Container
At the start of a fire (thermal runaway), the fleece lining on the ceiling melts, allowing the AkkuGrain to cascade down the walls and surround the vehicle with granulate.
With the consumption of oxygen and the cooling of the fire source, the extinguishing process for an internal combustion engine vehicle is immediately completed.
In the case of an electric vehicle, if the lithium battery fails, a thermal runaway can occur in the worst case, releasing all stored electrical energy uncontrollably. This leads to severe overheating of the battery to 600–1100°C. Initially, flammable solvents evaporate from the electrolyte.
The adsorptive capacity of the AkkuGrain reduces and neutralizes the escaping solvents and reaction gases, lowering the risk of combustion and explosions.
When the LiPF6 salt decomposes into highly toxic byproducts, water vapor hydrolyzes these into HF and H₃PO₄, which are partially neutralized and fixed by the AkkuGrain.
Decomposition products from the plastics in the lithium battery include inorganic gases such as CO₂, CO, CH₄, and H₂, as well as numerous organic compounds with increasing molecular weight up to soot. The soot is partially adsorbed by the AkkuGrain. The adsorption of organic decomposition products is more complete the higher their molecular weight.
Without protective measures, a lithium battery thermal runaway often results in intense fire or explosions, potentially destroying surrounding structures and endangering the health of people nearby.
Inside the fire container, the AkkuGrain generates large amounts of water vapor, which helps reduce the high temperatures of the vehicle.
Fires and explosions are additionally contained by patented spray hatches. The AkkuGrain significantly reduces the risk of further explosions and fires. Likewise, water vapor decomposes toxic LiPF6 byproducts, and the resulting acidic products HF and H₃PO₄ are largely neutralized and fixed in the AkkuGrain.
Cooling During a Fire of an Electric Vehicle in the Quarantine/Extinguishing Container
Water vapor from heat removal, generated by the hot areas of the battery during thermal runaway, escapes into the container’s free gas space. Some of the vapor exits the unpressurized container through relief openings, releasing energy into the surrounding air. The remaining vapor condenses on the outer walls and roof, releasing the heat generated during condensation through the metal walls immediately and completely to the outside.
